Para Copper

By the time it closed, it looked like it came from a conversation.

Export won opportunities and leads from Copper, join them on the contact detail, and recover how the relationship actually started.

CloseRev reads a Copper export of won opportunities — the contact's phone or email, the value and the close date — and matches it against the leads that produced them. Copper's design assumption is that business is won through relationships conducted in email, which is usually true and which makes the first touch unusually hard to see by the time the deal closes. Revenue with no traceable lead is reported as Direct / Unknown.

La brecha

Every deal traces back to an email thread, and every email thread traces back to something nobody wrote down.

  1. Necesaria

    Contact phone or email

On the person record. In a relationship-led firm the email address is the durable key and the phone is often secondary.

  2. Necesaria

    Opportunity value

Won opportunities with their amount. Open pipeline is a forecast.

  3. Necesaria

    Close date

When it was marked won. Keep the contact created date too — the interval is often a year or more here.

  4. Necesaria

    Source or lead status

Whatever the record carries about origin, exported as a claim to be tested rather than a fact.

Paso a paso

Cómo sacar el archivo de Copper.

Escrito para quien tiene Copper abierto en la pestaña de al lado. Los nombres de los informes varían según la edición, así que cada paso indica qué buscar.

  1. Export won opportunities

One row per win with a contact detail, the value and the close date.

  2. Export the people, with their created dates

The interval between a contact appearing and a deal closing is the number this page exists to make visible.

  3. Export your lead sources

Referrals, events, content downloads, search, and any list or introduction you paid for.

  4. Take two years

Relationship-led sales cycles routinely exceed a year, and a shorter file attributes this year's revenue to the wrong period entirely.

  5. Upload

The join runs on the email and the phone, normalised, with the interval from first contact to close reported per source.

El argumento

Qué cambia cuando cada deal y el anuncio comparten una fila.

A long relationship erases its own origin

When a deal closes after eighteen months of conversation, everybody involved remembers the conversation and nobody remembers the webinar, the introduction or the search that started it.

The CRM reflects that: the record is rich in recent activity and thin on how it began, because the beginning was the least interesting part at the time.

Joining the won deal back to the original lead file recovers the origin from data rather than from memory, and memory is reliably wrong about this.

The most common correction is that a channel everybody had written off as ineffective turns out to have started a large share of the relationships that later paid.

That is not a small finding when the channel in question is about to be cut for producing no attributable revenue.

Referral and introduction are the dominant channels and they have real costs

Professional firms win work through people who vouch for them, and the effort behind that — events, memberships, hospitality, content, time — is a genuine budget line.

Because it produces no click and no invoice from a platform, it is absent from the marketing report while consuming a meaningful share of the marketing effort.

Recording the referrer at first contact makes it a source like any other, ranked on the same closed revenue.

Firms that do this usually find the ranking supports what the partners already believed, with one or two surprises that change where the year's effort goes.

The surprises are the return on the exercise; the confirmations are what make the report trusted.

Email as the system of record makes the contact detail the strongest key

Copper's whole premise is that the relationship lives in email, which means the email address on a record is nearly always current and correct.

That makes it an unusually reliable join key — better than a phone number, which is the reverse of most of this catalogue.

Where a person has changed employer, the same individual can appear twice with different addresses, and the report shows both rather than silently merging them.

Deciding whether those are one relationship or two is a judgement about your business, and the report leaves it to you with the evidence in front of you.

Merging them automatically would be the kind of quiet assumption that makes an attribution number impossible to defend.

Two years of window is not conservatism, it is the cycle

For consultancies, agencies and professional services, the interval between a first conversation and a signed engagement is frequently measured in seasons.

A twelve-month file therefore reports on marketing that ran before the file starts, and the ranking it produces is about a period nobody can act on.

Grouping revenue by when the contact first appeared, rather than when the deal closed, puts each win against the effort that actually produced it.

The report also gives that interval per source, which tells you which channels can be turned on for this year and which are next year's work.

Preguntas justas

«Copper ya hace eso». No exactamente.

Ellos dicen

«Copper already shows where our deals came from.»

Nosotros decimos

It shows the recent activity on the record. The first touch is usually eighteen months behind that and was never written down.

Ellos dicen

«Our work is all referral.»

Nosotros decimos

Then the report will show it as a number, which is what justifies the events and memberships that produce referrals.

Ellos dicen

«Our cycles are too long to measure.»

Nosotros decimos

They are too long for a twelve-month window. That is an argument for a two-year file, not against measuring.
