For Amazon Ads

On the marketplace, Amazon already knows. Everywhere else, nobody does.

For off-marketplace campaigns, use your own tagged lead records and match them against closed sales in your own system.

Amazon Ads sits on the lead side in CloseRev, and only for the part of it that drives sales away from the marketplace. Inside Amazon, the platform reports the purchase directly and there is nothing here to add; outside it — display and streaming inventory pointing at your own site, showroom or phone line — the sale happens somewhere Amazon cannot see, and matching it back requires your own lead records. Revenue with no traceable lead is reported as Direct / Unknown.

The gap

The campaign drove people to your own site and your own showroom, and the only report you have is about impressions.

Amazon Ads sees

What was sold, to whom, and for how much.

no shared row
Your ad account sees

The click, the keyword, the call, and what each one cost.

The file

What the export needs in it.

Three things carry the match: who, how much, and when. Anything else is optional and only changes how the report can be sliced.

  1. Needed

    Lead phone or email

On your own landing-page or enquiry record. Amazon's own exports do not hand you a customer's contact details, so this file has to be yours.

  2. Needed

    Campaign or placement tag

Whatever you stamped on the landing page or the enquiry. Without it there is no way to tell this channel's leads from anybody else's.

  3. Needed

    Lead date

When the enquiry arrived, which anchors the window.

  4. Optional

    Inventory type

Display, streaming or audio. Their lags differ enough that blending them hides the pattern.

Step by step

Getting the file out of Amazon Ads.

Written for somebody with Amazon Ads open in the next tab. Report names vary by edition, so each step says what to look for.

  1. Decide which half you are measuring

Marketplace sales are already reported by the platform and are not what this is for. This is for campaigns pointing away from it.

  2. Tag the destination

A distinct landing page, a distinct phone number, or a campaign parameter carried onto the enquiry record. Everything downstream depends on this existing.

  3. Export your own lead records

Contact detail, the tag and the date. This file comes from your site or CRM, not from the advertising account.

  4. Export closed sales

A contact detail, the amount and the date, from your own point of sale, CRM or order system.

  5. Upload both

The join runs on the phone and the email, normalised, with unmatched leads and unmatched revenue both kept visible.

What comes back

The page Amazon Ads cannot show you.

Revenue by channel, the count of sales behind each figure, and an honest bucket for the ones nobody could trace. Sample figures, from the worked example on the Ecommerce & Retail page — not from a Amazon Ads account.

Traced to a channel$196,00070% of $280,000
Sales matched192 of 264high confidence only
Average sale$1,060per paid sale

Google Ads84$98,000
Meta Ads61$53,200

Unmatched sales stay in Direct / Unknown. They are never spread across the paid channels to make the total look better.

The argument

What changes when the lead and the ad share a row.

The honest scope of this page is narrower than the product

A large part of what this platform sells is advertising that ends in a purchase on the marketplace, where the platform observes the transaction itself.

There is nothing useful to add there, and a page claiming otherwise would be selling a solution to a problem that does not exist.

What it cannot see is the campaign that sent somebody to your own site, your showroom or your phone line, because the sale then happens in a system it has no access to.

That gap is the only thing this page is about, and being specific about it is more useful than implying the tool covers the whole account.

Streaming and display inventory have a lag that display-style reporting hides

An advert seen during a programme is closer to television than to search: nobody clicks, and the effect appears days or weeks later as somebody arriving by name.

Measured on click-through behaviour, that inventory reports almost nothing, in the same way television always has.

Matching enquiries to sales over a longer window at least puts the revenue in the right period, and the report groups by when the enquiry arrived rather than when the money did.

It will not manufacture a link for somebody who never identified themselves. What it will do is stop the revenue being credited to whichever channel they used to reach you afterwards.

Without a tag on your own side there is nothing to measure

This is the one channel in this catalogue where the lead file cannot come from the advertising platform at all, because the platform does not hand over contact details.

A distinct landing page, a distinct tracked number, or a campaign parameter written onto the enquiry record — any one of those creates the file. None of them is expensive.

Where none exists, every enquiry this channel produced lands in Direct / Unknown, and the report will say so rather than distributing it across the channels that do have data.

That statement is itself the finding for a lot of accounts, and it is worth having before the next budget rather than after it.

Marketplace and own-channel revenue should never be summed

The two have different margins, different data and different strategic value: one builds a relationship you own and the other builds one the marketplace owns.

Adding them produces a total that flatters the channel and answers no question anybody is actually asking.

The report covers only the second, and says so on every figure, so the number can sit beside the platform's own marketplace reporting without pretending to replace it.

Two clear numbers with different scopes are more useful than one blended number whose scope nobody can state.

Fair questions

“Amazon Ads already does that.” Not quite.

They say

“The platform reports our sales already.”

We say

On the marketplace, accurately. This is only about the campaigns that send people somewhere else.

They say

“We cannot tag streaming inventory.”

We say

You can tag the destination — a landing page or a phone number. That is enough, and it is where the lead becomes identifiable.

They say

“Nobody clicks on streaming adverts.”

We say

Correct, which is why the measurement is an enquiry arriving later, over a longer window, rather than a click.

Questions

Amazon Ads, specifically.

Something else? Ask us and a person answers.

No, and it could not usefully: the platform does not hand over customer contact details, so the lead file has to be your own records.

Amazon Ads and the other product names and logos on this page belong to their owners and are shown to identify the software a file comes from. CloseRev is not affiliated with or endorsed by them, and connects to none of them: it reads a file you export.

Two exports, and you will know.

Nothing to install in Amazon Ads, no API key, and no need to have been tracking anything until now. Last year works as well as this month.
